King Country; hills appearing chucked together haphazard from below, look ordinarily scrumpled up on the map. Closer looking shows swamps, cliffs (miles long), hidden valleys and flatlands, rivers exiting on three sides. Details matter here.
Rangipuanoano is the highest peak for a few kms in each direction. The farmer tells me how you can see all the volcanos, how he cleared the bush in 1974. There are treestumps. Ferns are growing on some slopes. I see goats and hear turkeys. Because of something stupid I did, only 17 or so seconds of the film turn out. I have to return months later, when the turkeys are gone and the goats are hiding. The film is of hillsides, with bush and shadows, and of cows.
