Talks

Mimetic Television

Douglas Bagnall

A mimetic TV imitates broadcast television, constructing previously unseen video sequences. This talk will outline the simple statistical model used, and discuss an optimised implementation. Example output will be shown.

Douglas Bagnall is a Wellington artist who makes machines that make video.

Upstage Presentation

Vicki Smith and Helen Varley Jamieson (remote)

UpStage (http://www.upstage.org.nz) is a web-based venue for live performance, incorporating graphics, text, text2speech, web cams, & audience interaction. it's open source & cross-platform (linux, mac, pc), functions over dialup, & is very user-friendly & engaging.

Helen and Vicki will demonstrate the software from afar.

The state of Annodex - media for the Web

S. Pfeiffer and C. Parker

How cool would it be to attach hyperlinks to segments of a podcast, e.g. to the project that is currently being discussed? Or if you could search for specific segments inside podcasts or pick out and listen to just the segments that interest you? Annodex allows just that. It is a file format that is using the open source codecs from xiph.org (Ogg Vorbis, Speex, and Theora) and creates markup tracks in the form of metadata, annotations, and hyperlinks. With such timed textual representations of audio-visual content, the web-like interactions of search and hyperlinking are possible.

Many individuals are now contributing code to make the vision of a Webs of media come true. Current open source Annodex technology encompasses the base libraries and tools in C, support in the media frameworks xine, videolan and gstreamer, bindings for python, perl and php, an apache plugin, and applications such as the Firefox extension, CMMLWiki (an Annodex wiki) and annoamp (annodex audio podcasting). Debian and Redhat packaging is also available.

The Annodex community has also recently started creation of a foundation to

This talk will present the state of development of Annodex, and provide some hands-on experience in using the tools.

Flumotion

Jeff Waugh

Flumotion is a streaming media platform for the Free World. It takes the pipeline/plugin based approach of the GStreamer multimedia framework and extends it across the network - delivering a hackable, scalable and easy to use platform for streaming Internet multimedia. Find out how to run a Flumotion streaming server, how to muck around with its innards, and how to use it for your own nefarious purposes.

The State of Game Development with Linux

Julian Oliver

Julian talks about developing games on the Linux platform.

Linux Australia Podcast

James Purser

(remote talk using VoIP)

The talk will cover the technical and social aspects to producing the Linux Australia Update, a fortnightly podcast looking at the FOSS community both in Australia and around the region. Subjects covered will include formats used and why, Audacity and why its the perfect tool on any platform, communicating with your interviewees, which VOIP package for the hard up podcaster and live streaming using IDJC, an icecast/shoutcast client developed by Stephen Fairchild of the UK.

Update on Sweep

Conrad Parker

Sweep is an audio editor and live playback tool for GNU/Linux, BSD and compatible systems. It supports many music and voice formats including WAV, AIFF, Ogg Vorbis, Speex and MP3, with multichannel editing and LADSPA effects plugins. Inside lives a pesky little virtual stylus called Scrubby who enjoys mixing around in your files.

Introducing Sweep 0.9.0, a major update including timely support for the GTK2 widget set ;-) This demo will feature a little bit of this and a little bit of that.

CMMLWiki

Conrad Parker

CMMLWiki is a wiki for video, a "Totally Web 2.0" collaborative editing environment for Annodex media. CMMLWiki makes it trivial to host your own video web, for blogging, fun or freedom.

Real-time audio over IP

Jean-Marc Valin

Use of Linux at a Post Production House.

Rising Sun research

Use of Linux in the film industry

Performance night at Arc

map showing route between university
and arc

Arc Cafe is booked for a party / performances on monday night, all welcome. If you'd like to play (preferably something involving a computer running Linux :-) then please let us know. Arc is a large place, with quiet areas where you can sit and talk if the music gets too much.

Getting to Arc

Arc is in High Street, between Broadway and Princes Street. From the university, you head towards the centre of town and continue a little way out the other side. If you walk it will take about 30 minutes; otherwise there are buses and taxis.

The map on the right lacks irrelevant streets. Any local will be able to assist you.

Call for Participation

The Call for participation is closed.

Mailing List

We are using the lca-audioconf mailing list for discussion about the digital arts miniconf (don't be put off by the name mismatch; it reflects concern for conserving sysadmin time).

Contact

The miniconf is being organised by Douglas Bagnall, Silvia Pfeiffer, and Conrad Parker, with venue and other logistics provided by the organisers of LCA2006.

Please send comments, ideas and suggestions related to this and future audio mini-confs to lca-audioconf@lists.linux.conf.au.
